Abstract
Co2 laser myringotomy has previously been proven effective in patients with serous otitis media for short-term aeration of the middle ear. However, the system based on a microscope and a coaxially aligned laser is cumbersome and expensive. So we
have
used Nd : YAG laser for myringotomy. In order to examine whether a Nd : YAG laser assisted myringotomy may damage to the cochlea, a perforation was made in the unilateral anterior inferior quadrant of 5 guinea pigs. Auditory evoked brainstem
responses
(ABR) threshold was measured before and after laser myringotomy. All guinea pigs were sacrificed for a scanning electronmicroscopic (SEM) study. No statistically significant change of ABR threshold and morphology of outer hair cells compared to
normal
side. These findings suggest that Nd : YAG laser myringotomy is safe.
